About the MOTION Act

TCA § 55-31-104Unclaimed Vehicle Portal

Tennessee's MOTION Act requires the Department of Revenue to establish and maintain a centralized web portal for the management of unclaimed and abandoned vehicle notices statewide.

What This Portal Does

  • Provides a single, statewide platform for tow companies and law enforcement to post notices of abandoned and unclaimed vehicles
  • Performs DMV ownership lookups to identify registered owners and lienholders
  • Facilitates tracked mail notifications (USPS Priority Mail) to owners and lienholders
  • Offers free, real-time public access so vehicle owners can search by VIN or license plate to locate their towed vehicle
  • Processes per-transaction posting fees through the State's authorized payment gateway

For Vehicle Owners

If you believe your vehicle has been towed or impounded, you can search this portal at no cost using your VIN or license plate number. Search results will include the towing company's contact information, storage location, outstanding fees, and how to reclaim your vehicle.

For Tow Companies & Law Enforcement

Publishers (tow companies, garagekeepers, and law enforcement agencies) must register on this portal to post unclaimed vehicle notices as required by TCA § 55-31-104. The registration process includes eligibility certification and agreement to per-transaction fees.
